Appearance:
Has the look of a large dog and cat put together. He stands 3’9” at the shoulder. His fur is an orange-red color with a mane of thick, red hair running from behind his shoulders to his head. Longer strands of that red hair hang in braids behind his head tied with silver beads. Each braid has a long feather in it that stick up above his head. Nanaki also wears huge bangles on all four legs and has tattoos on the upper parts of his legs. A “XIII” has been tattooed onto his left shoulder by Hojo.
Nanaki has two earrings in the right ear and one in the left. His right eye is scarred and cannot be opened. Something like war paint runs in lines under his eyes. The beast’s snout is more big-cat-like than wolf-like and so is his tail—it’s the length of his body and tipped with a living flame. Nanaki claims his tail has a mind of its own.
History:
It all starts at Cosmo Canyon. Nanaki is born to Seto, a warrior of a race doomed to die in the upcoming Gi War. In this war, Nanaki’s mother dies and his father apparently abandons the two of them for his own safety, leaving Nanaki to grow up hating his father. He is raised by the Elder Bugenhagen, whom he calls his grandfather.
(Although FFVII:BC claims Nanaki went with Hojo in place of a female of his species, I don’t know enough about that game to be sure. In any case, Nanaki is captured by Hojo and brought to Midgar.) Hojo calls his new specimen “Red XIII” and brands a tattoo of “XIII” on Nanaki’s left shoulder.
Hojo plans to breed Nanaki and Aeris --???--after she’s captured, but the party infiltrates and escapes the Shinra Building with Aeris and Nanaki.
When the party arrives in Cosmo Canyon, Nanaki learns the truth about his father, which stuns him and changes his entire outlook about who his father was. From then on, Nanaki is proud to be the son of Seto.
Nanaki follows the party to help protect the Planet, something he is very in tune with because of Bugenhagen.
Personality:
Despite being described to the party as a “child,” Nanaki is very wise and mature. That doesn’t make him stuffy, but rather someone you know you can come to for advice. He is still curious about things.
He gets annoyed when anyone treats him like a dumb animal and he hates it when you pull his tail. Other than that, he doesn’t act like a wild beast at all. In fact, if he were human, he’d probably be like some English person who drinks tea and reads classical literature for entertainment.
He doesn’t like hot places. And despite having a Charmander-like tail, I don’t believe it’s ever mentioned that Nanaki doesn’t like water or can’t get his tail wet.
